On February 12th we began the basic modeling of the seal tail flipper using clay. This is the first stage of this year’s design project. For this project we will be working with Dr. Graham Doig to model a leopard seal flipper and testing it’s efficiency as a propulsion system in water. Eventually this design may be applied to submarines or other underwater mechanical devices as a way to reduce noise and propel more efficiently. Although there are very few measurements for the leopard seal flipper, we used photos as a general guideline. This is the first stage in our seal flipper design model. We hope to make a SolidWorks animated model to print from a 3D printer.
