Cat-tongue Lint Remover Experiment

Mini Projects

The Cat-tongue Lint Remover was a mini-design project that we did in fall quarter to give members some experience with the Biomimetic Design Process. Cats are notorious for continuously grooming themselves, which they are able accomplish with their specially barbed tongue. Because of this, we looked to their tongues as inspiration for creating a surface texture that can effectively pick up lint without getting caught or pulling on clothing material. The prototypes were made using molding silicon, which we poured over a clay sheet imprinted with toothpick holes. These created the barbed surface texture that resembled the cat tongue barbs.
